The AHA (SA) recognised many years ago that training forms a vital part of preparing people to work in South Australian hotels and in 1985, Hospitality Group Training (HGT) was formed.
HGT is the largest industry-based group training scheme in SA. Its principal purpose is to facilitate the employment, training and development of apprentices and trainees within the hospitality industry.
HGT is a non-profit organisation which is supported by the State Government of SA, along with Australia’s Commonwealth Government. HGT is managed by a board of directors, which has equal representation from the AHA (SA) and the major hospitality union in SA, the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union (LHMU).
HGT employs more than 400 apprentices and trainees at any given time and rotates them between suitable host establishments during their training contracts. This enables the employee to experience different workplaces and provides a diverse learning environment.
HGT employs apprentice cooks and butchers, as well as trainees in the areas of customer service (food and beverage, accommodation and office administration) and trainee kitchen-hands.
