SA hotels were the first hotels in Australia to establish a voluntary code of practice to deal with the serious issue of problem gambling. With the total support of the hotel industry, the Responsible Gambling Code of Practice became law in 2001.

It is a condition of a gaming licence that a licence-holder must comply with the code. If a licence-holder does not, he or she will be in breach of the licence and could face penalties in accordance with the Gaming Machines Act 1992.

The code provides a framework to ensure that the gambling activities that take place in a gaming venue are consistent with the expectations of the community and are conducted in a responsible manner so as to minimise the harm caused by gambling.
